How to Take Better Photographs of People – Part Two

By Tuesday, September 11, 2012 0 Permalink 0

Have you ever looked at a portrait you have taken and felt like something is missing?  Most likely you missed connecting with the person you were photographing.

Many people are not comfortable in front of the camera (myself included). When someone is not comfortable you get frozen, awkward expressions.

Tip Two: Connect

In order to create a meaningful portrait, you must connect with your subject. How? Talk to them. Engage them. Get their mind off being photographed.

Most people’s emotions will play out across their faces. If “I’m so un-photogenic” is going through their head, you will see the uncertainty in their expression.

When you connect, you will know it and see it in their eyes. It’s very hard to describe, it just happens. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
