Camera Gear and Other Good Stuff

One of the more common questions I get is – What kind of camera gear do you use?

So for those of you that are interested in what I shoot with, here it is. If you aren’t a photo geek like me, feel free to move onto the next post.

When I’m shooting portraits my “go to” set up is my Canon 5D with a Tamron 28 – 75mm (one of these days I’ll upgrade to the Canon version). This duo has gotten me through many, many shoots.

The outside of this lens has seen better days. Years ago it was dropped on cement and fortunately, only the UV filter shattered. But getting the filter off was difficult and the ring that the filter threaded to eventually came off the lens too. You can see what it looks like above.

Other lenses that I use:
Canon 50 mm f1.4
Canon 20 mm f 2.8
Canon 100 mm f2.8
Canon 70 – 200 f 2.8

I also use a couple of Canon Speedlite 580EX units when needed. I greatly prefer natural light so I always carry foldable reflectors with me.

I have one reflector that expands to about 6 feet by 3 feet. It can convert to a reflector (silver, white, or light gold), scrim, or gobo. I also have a circular light gold/white reflector that is about 3 feet wide.

Oh, and when I’m being good, I use a tripod. I’ve had it for over 15 years. It’s made by Manfrotto and has a Grip Action Head (like this one). I have lots of other gear I use but it doesn’t necessarily come with me to every shoot.

What do I want to get next? Either the new Canon 5D Mark III or maybe I’ll finally get the Canon version of my 28 – 75mm lens.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
